Projected along this path are some of the many delightful illustrations featured on plant labels in our Kitchen Garden, located just over the hedge in the Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.
In a community engagement project celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Children’s Garden in October 2024, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria joined forces with students from Thornbury Primary School to reimagine the plant label designs throughout the Children’s Garden. For the Kitchen Garden plant labels, this meant creating beautiful illustrations of 60 food plants from all around the world. The labels bring the garden to life, and help children and their grown-ups identify plants growing in the earth, rather than sitting on a supermarket shelf.
The plant label project also extends to key plants in the wider Children’s Garden, from bottle trees to bamboo to banksias. There, the illustrations reveal wonderful stories about the plants and the animals who visit them.
